On behalf of Bellarmine University, we would like to thank all of our current donors for their generosity and support.
These brothers have a strong bond. They possess an exceptional work ethic and high regard for education. That's what their parents modeled and worked hard to provide for them. That's why they chose to honor their parents by establishing the Kalmey Family Endowed Fund. The endowed grant assists the financial needs of a student who possesses a strong work ethic and a strong desire to earn a degree. In addition, the award is structured in three different four-year cycles. Each brother crafted one of the cycles. The award will assist the traditional student, athletes and non-traditional students who are returning to school to complete a degree. By making use of good tax planning, it is possible to make a much more substantial gift than many people would think. John R. Bohn, Jr. '59 has been in the tax planning business for the past forty years. Over the years, John built an accounting practice from a one-man office and part-time secretary to the Louisville office of the well-known CPA firm of Potter & Company. Having retired from Potter & Company, he now serves as President of Holdaway Medical Services, a full service medical equipment company serving nursing homes and home patients in six states. Marlene and John have made plans to leave their legacy at Bellarmine. By naming Bellarmine owner and beneficiary of a whole-life insurance policy, Marlene's and John's planned gift will financially support the work they are helping the College do today. "We were inspired to do something for the College by a similar gift from a classmate of mine many years ago", said John. "Life insurance presents an opportunity to provide a substantial gift which will benefit Bellarmine. Through nominal, tax deductible premium payments spread over several years you can make an important gift." By combining charitable planning and life insurance, many of these concerns can be alleviated.
Joe Ferguson, founder of Woodside Travel, changed its name to Carlson Wagonlit Travel, and presided as owner and CEO for over 30 years. The company grew from a four person downtown office in Louisville to 60+ corporate and leisure locations. Joe retired in 2001. Ferguson and travel will always be linked, and now Joe and Carol have added Bellarmine to their plans. The Fergusons had supported international travel for Bellarmine students on an annual basis for many years. A few years ago, they decided to make their commitment permanent by establishing an endowed fund at Bellarmine to support rigorous academic study abroad experiences for students, giving them the opportunity that goes beyond the traditional classroom environment. Their wish is to encourage student initiative, academic rigor, creativity, and independence in thinking and learning. The Ferguson Fund has enhanced student interest in study abroad, has enabled more Bellarmine students to do work abroad, and has encouraged faculty to design more program offerings for students abroad. Students have studied in China, Switzerland, Australia, Denmark, Ecuador and Africa.
It started with a friendship. It grew in trust and respect. It resulted in a shared commitment to leave a legacy. So goes the story of Bob and Helene Gorman and Martha Oliver, Bellarmine University Accounting Professor Emeritus. Through their friendship with Martha, the Gormans came to know Bellarmine. They wanted to find a way to make a difference in the lives of Bellarmine students. Bob and Helene gave thoughtful consideration and created a charitable remainder unitrust. In so doing, they provided themselves with an income for life, set up guidelines to create the Kevin Carradine Davis Memorial Endowed Scholarship in honor of their son, and will assist the financial needs of Bellarmine students. Before Martha retired from Bellarmine, she provided the seed money and guidelines that established the Martha Oliver Endowed Accounting Scholarship. "All three of us are pleased with our decisions, but even more pleased that the students of Bellarmine benefit from what we have established."
Mary Agnes Dugan Clayton Endowed Scholarship A few years ago high school students in Nelson County, KY began having more access to more Bellarmine scholarships than most students, thanks to Bellarmine alumnus and trustee, Joseph Paul Clayton ’71. Clayton, Chairman of Sirius Satellite Radio, made provisions through a gift that provided annual scholarship aid to students from his home town. One scholarship provided full tuition plus room and board for a Bethlehem High School student and is named for his mother, Mary Agnes Dugan Clayton, a 1943 graduate of Bethlehem. “It’s one of the most satisfying gifts I ever made” said Joe. So rewarding, in fact, that he funded an endowment for this program to be certain Bethlehem High School students can afford and receive a Bellarmine education like the one he received.
